Immunity boost
By Lucas Baker
As the month of April comes to an end, the covid vaccine is more available than ever. According to Our World In Data, nearly 95 million people are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. Covid vaccines have been available since 2020, but now almost everyone can get the vaccine. There are multiple vaccine choices available: Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson
Each vaccine is different, as some take longer than others. According to the CDC, Moderna and Pfizer take two shots before full immunity and are about 94% effective, while J&J only takes one and is around 66% effective. They all have very similar side effects. The CDC says side effects usually include headaches, fevers, muscle pain, and tiredness. The J&J vaccine, however, can rarely cause blood clots. These side effects are caused by our immune system reacting to the vaccine to build immunity to the virus.
The number of vaccinated people in the U.S. keeps growing each day. Today, nearly 100 million people have been vaccinated from covid-19. It is estimated that almost 30% of the U.S. population has been vaccinated. It is thought that around 70% of the population needs to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity. This is why the vaccine needs to be taken in order to end the pandemic.
The vaccine is important because it can help end this pandemic and save lives. It is free, and it is very available so anyone can get it. The vaccine has some side effects, but the side effects don’t last long. The vaccine will save a lot more lives than just masks and social distancing, and it will allow us to get back to our normal lives.

The Carl Junction Bulldogs’ Baseball Club is foreseeing a very promising season ahead. Eight starting seniors are returning from last season, and help from Jordan Woodruff and Cole Wilson in the outfield cannot go unnoticed. Dalton Mills and Kyler Perry have also secured starting positions on the varsity squad. Noah Southern believes that with the help from a few juniors and the rest of the senior class, their season will be nothing short of phenomenal.
Noah Southern and Carson Johnson have committed to local colleges to play baseball. Other prospects in the college pool such as Drew Beyer, Dylan Eck, and Alex Baker are undetermined as of right now. This proves the talent the Bulldogs possess.
The Bulldogs’ are currently boasting a 9-3 record, falling to only Hollister, Carthage, and Aurora. All three games were at a differential of two runs or less. one of those three losses was versus Carthage during the championship game in Carthage’s own annual tournament. The Bulldogs went 2-0 in pool play to earn a 1-seed in the tournament, beating Mount Vernon and Seneca.
The bulldog’s sights are set high, with a district championship plaque being only the beginning. There is a lot of ‘ball left to play which will determine the remainder of the season for the boys. COC (Central Ozark Conference) play has begun, this will entail the Bulldogs to showcase their skills versus schools like Willard, Ozark, Nixa, and Republic.

Changing our future

This is an informative article about how diversity is shared in the school. There is a club at CJHS called R.E.D, which stands for racial and ethnic diversity. Counselor Jen Chase is the sponsor of the club. She wanted to show that this is a serious thing that she thinks not enough people understand and she wants to help people learn more about the topic. She made this club so that some people would become more aware of what they say and how they act towards people who have different beliefs or are of different races than themselves.
Over the summer she sent out a message to anyone in the school that was listed as any kind of minority and asked if the club would be something that seemed interesting in the school. She realizes that her school may not be the most diverse but she does point out that she includes everyone.
“Having a child of color myself has really made me want to show people that they always have a place that they are thought about,” said Jen Chase.
Her goal idea was to celebrate and bring awareness to the racial and ethnic diversity within the school and community.
CJHS may not be the most diverse school but they try to make sure that the different ethnicities in the buildings know they are thought of. Some of the people in the R.E.D Club have been nice enough to answer a couple of questions about how diversity has impacted the school and what encouraged them to become a part of the club, here are their answers.
Tiffany Pham states, “Appreciating and acknowledging diversity has become a necessity in today's society. To me, it's important to educate ourselves about all cultures - not just our own. This is just the next step of understanding what it's like to "walk in someone else's shoes." I wanted to help create and join R.E.D Club to encourage betterment within the student body, as well as helping raise awareness for various cultures, races, and ethnicities we have around us.”
Another member of the club Montserrat Rodriguez said, “When Mrs. Chase emailed me along with several other students and proposed this club, I was ecstatic. Being a minority in a predominantly white school is tough at times, so knowing that we would be able to create a club surrounding the celebration of each other’s cultures, ethnicities and races was so relieving.’ ‘I think that right now the club might not have the biggest impact, but I am incredibly hopeful that in years to come the club will grow, the people will be more open to learning, and the impact will be more noticeable.’ Since this is my last year I won’t be able to see this change, but I hope that the students that walk through the school’s hallways in future years know and are proud of this beautiful club.”
The club has so far been very successful. They have accomplished the goals they had set initially and started making more for next year. They have had two events this year and are planning on having 2 more, before the end of the school year. The club may be small at the moment but once more people find out about it and how to be a part of it Mrs. Chase thinks it will be very large, successful, and carries along for many years. The whole reason this club was made was to make people become more comfortable with who they are and where they came from. By helping them understand that they are also trying to teach their history they hope that they can reach out to more people. They want to teach people that people shouldn’t see race or skin colors and treat that person differently.
The top goal of this club is to identify the challenges that people that are part of other minorities face and make a change. They want them to realize they aren’t alone and that people do care about their culture and the things they have done to become equal to everyone else.

The G.O.A.T. debate is over. Nobody comes close to Michael Jordan as the greatest basketball player of all time. So instead of attempting to spark dumb, irrelevant arguments about how Lebron might one day take his title, a more proper, fair debate will begin. The new question: Who is the better all-around player between Lebron James and our lost legend, Kobe Bryant. It will be considerably easier to compare these two players, mainly because they have actually played against each other, on several occasions. The same “check-box system” will be used, and the winner will once again be the player with the most checkmarks at the end.
We will begin with discussing offense, specifically scoring. Kobe Bryant was known as one of the most lethal shooters of all time, some calling him an assassin. Throughout his career, he averaged exactly 25 points per game, with a field goal (FG) percentage of .447. His career free-throw percentage was an excellent .837. It must be noted that Kobe’s specialty shots were three’s, fadeaways, and during his NBA youth, dunks. On the other hand, Lebron James is more than an offensive threat. As of now, Lebron’s career FG percentage is an astounding .504. This statistically means he makes a tad bit more than half of his shots, which is easier said than done. Along with an incredible field goal percentage, he also holds a superior three-point percentage. Now although Lebron has a better field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and has more career points, this one has to go to Kobe. Kobe is more clutch, more consistent, and a major factor in Lebron’s FG percentage is that he puts up a significantly higher amount of layups and dunks than his counterpart. Kobe begins with the upper hand.
It is only right to nextly compare the other offensive stats of Bryant and James. Kobe averaged 4.7 assists and 1.1 offensive rebounds per game, which is insane for a shooting guard of his stature. Although, his low-assist numbers will not be able to give him an advantage. Kobe was often referred to as a ball hog, which isn’t very fair because most people wouldn’t pass to Derek Fisher either. Lebron James dominates Kobe’s assist numbers with a career of 7.4 per game but merely beats him in offensive rebounds. Lebron is a great facilitator, and it is apparent that he deserves to tie with this one. After two rounds, it is even at one-and-one.
Now we move on to the other side of the court, defense. Kobe Bryant averaged 4.1 defensive rebounds per game, which is outstanding for a shooting guard. Along with rebounds, he averaged a modest 1.4 steals per game. Lebron averages 6.3 rebounds per game and 1.6 steals, surreal for a forward. Before even examining Lebron’s numbers as a defender, I knew he would be most likely to take this category’s checkbox. Lebron is one of the most versatile defenders in NBA history, and also one of the best perimeter defenders. Lebron also averages almost twice as many blocks per game as Kobe but doesn’t say much considering Lebron has three inches on him. Without any further discussion, Lebron takes this category and the lead, two to one.
A basketball debate wouldn’t be one without mentioning rings. Kobe Bryant had a five and two record in the NBA Finals, including a three-peat with Shaq. Only five teams in NBA history have three-peated. Lebron James has an NBA Finals record of four and six and is on a shortlist of players who have appeared in the finals ten or more times. Already it is apparent that Kobe Bryant has a greater past in the finals, but Kobe didn’t do it by himself. For his three-peat, he of course had Shaq as a companion. As for the last two that he won, he was assisted by Pau Gasol and Ron Artest. On the other side, after examining Lebron’s teammates in his finals losses, it is pretty clear that Kobe is superior in this category. Lebron lost finals series with superstars such as Kyrie Irving, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Kevin Love, and Zydrunas Ilgauskas. Very disappointing. Kobe Bryant receives his second check and ties the competition back up before the finale.
The difficulty of choosing a fair category to justify the winner of this debate was very high. With that being said, the topic of ability on the court will be changed to their influence on the very sport. Kobe Bryant is definitely the NBA player most looked up to this generation. While Lebron is extremely, extremely popular amongst the youth of today, Kobe’s influence was worldwide. After his tragic death, we saw murals in China, statues and dedications in several European countries, and of course his line of memorabilia. From the sneakers to the backpacks, his name is everywhere. Although, Lebron definitely has a grand reputation in the sports world. His legacy is still relevant in Miami and Cleveland, as well as his high school days. Although, this doesn’t touch the Mamba. Kobe is probably more recognized by his nickname than any other player is by their first and last.
The battle is over. After five major discussions comparing the greatness of these NBA legends, it ends with Kobe Bryant as the victor. Early in 2020, the world awoke to an unimaginable pain when the news headlines read that Kobe Bryant had passed away in a helicopter accident. Not only did the world lose a great athlete, but it also lost a model citizen. A man of compassion. A man with a heart. While we must recognize Lebron for his role in the sports universe, Kobe was way more than an athlete. Kobe Bryant defeats Lebron James and hands him a loss many wouldn’t agree with, but it isn’t all stats. It is the mentality. Mamba Mentality.

Life without limits
By Lilian Pace
Most people love to travel on breaks, holidays, or just in general. But nowadays it's not that easy just to pack up and leave. There are now new restrictions and precautions with Covid-19.
People can’t just hop on a plane anymore all passengers coming to the United States are required to have a negative covid test result or documentation of recovery from Covid-19 before they board, even if they are a U.S citizen.
When people decide to travel there are some things people can do. If you are eligible to get the vaccine, then wait two weeks after getting the vaccine to travel so your body can have time to build its protection if it needs to. Also, get tested one to three days before traveling and keep your test results as proof. Masks are required through most transportation ways like planes, buses, and trains.
Coming back from your trip/vacation it's recommended to get tested within three to five days after coming back and self-quarantine for seven days. If not getting tested then self-quarantine for ten days.
Mexico is a popular destination. So when traveling there during a pandemic Mexico is not requiring a negative test or quarantine document upon arrival. But, most resorts ask guests to complete health questionnaires. Guests must know that even if Mexico doesn’t require a negative test to visit coming back the U.S does need to have a test taken 72 hours or less before returning to the U.S.
There has been a drastic decrease in travel to international destinations. Before Covid-19 international trips made up 86% of insured travel. Since covid-19 international travel is 47% of insured travel. The percentage change in the number of travelers in many destinations has decreased.
Now places like theme parks, museums, and landmarks that were famous tourist attractions now have to have smaller crowds and more controlled areas due to covid. Most places are doing mandatory temperature checks. On the rides, the seating is placed at a social distance length. “In preparing to reopen during this unusual time, we have to manage our theme parks in a very different way from what we've known before.” the Walt Disney Co. said in a statement. SeaWorld Orlando said it would modify some animal interactions. Which is one of the park's signature offerings. Six Flags said they will now be doing a virtual reservation system to control how many people could attend and stagger times.
Overall traveling lives have changed from last year with new restrictions on almost everything we do nowadays. Traveling is going to be made harder until corona continues to die down.

Some people might think that pediatric nursing is hard or boring, but in reality, it is quite exciting. They say pediatric nursing is easier because it deals with kids rather than with adults. Tracy Sneed is an RMA and she works with kids. According to Sneed, she says she likes helping people in general but kids more because she likes helping heal them from their injuries to make them feel better. Of course, there have been difficult situations for many nurses and doctors. Such as, sometimes nurses have to chase kids to give them vaccines. They have to try not to hurt the kids while giving them shots or any needed medical care. Doctors and nurses have tried to explain what any type of cancer or disorder is to the child and their parents. Nurses and doctors have to deal with the foster care system, social care workers, and foster parents. They say the most difficult ones are when child abuse is involved.
Sneed said “There are kids out there that need help”, she wants to be that person who can help but she doesn’t feel that she needs recognition from it. What made Sneed want to go back to school and get a degree in nursing was when she said, “When I had a stroke and I went to the hospital, the nurses helped me the most, that’s when I knew I could help other people.”
Sneed thinks that kids are the future of the next generation and if she can save the next generation, we will have a better society in the future. When working in the medical field, there’s a lot of pressure. One mistake and the doctor could give a patient too much or too little of their medication. When Sneed is giving the kids medicine or vaccine shots to make them feel better, she loves seeing the relief on the kid’s faces because she knows she’s making a difference. RMA stands for Register Medical Assistant which means they do vitals, give vaccines, draw blood, swab noses, swab throats to check if the patient has: strep, covid, or the flu, check for glucose levels, and iron levels.
Sneed wanted to be an RMA but for that to happen, she had to go to school for 18 months. RMA’s make about $25,000-$30,000 per year. Sneed says she only works well with other nurses/doctors when they are enthusiastic or enjoy doing their job. Pediatric nursing is not always fun, sometimes the nurses get sat on, spit-up on, or punched/kicked but like any job it has its ups and downs. In the end, it’s all worth it, when the nurses and doctors know they’ve healed the patients.

Gaslighting is a psychological abuse where a person is questioned of their sanity and perception of reality. People that experience this often feel very confused or are unable to have trust in themselves. Gaslighting can also be a form of manipulation towards a person to make them feel like they are going insane. The Healthline writes “How to Recognize Gaslighting and Get Help” which speaks about the signs of gaslighting, which are characterized as apologizing often, not feeling like the same person they used to be, being more anxious, less confident than they used to be, etc. The person who is gaslighting one typically wants them to doubt themselves to do whatever they want for them. A person being gaslit can be very confused or defensive about the abusive persons’ behavior. They may not realize that the person is being abusive, but the person being gaslit can often find ways to safely document evidence of the abuse and get help without being harmed. One can often tell a person is a gaslighter because of their manipulative personality. These people use different tactics based on how they come across to other individuals. They are very controlling and only care about themselves and what they need.
Gaslighting can mess with someone's brain and make them feel like they are not who they used to be, but there are many ways people can recover from this and get help. The person that was gaslit can practice mindfulness because being gaslit can ruin their thoughts. Also, they can keep a feelings journal and affirm their feelings and thoughts. Writing one’s thoughts in a journal can often tune them into one’s inner voice. It can often be useful to practice affirming one’s value. This will help with self-confidence and helping one heal from trauma. Lastly, a lot of people get help from a professional. Going to a therapist and getting help from a professional is one of the best ways to work through being gaslit. The therapist can help one separate their thoughts and beliefs from the person who gaslighted them and can help cope with one’s trauma. A good way is to just believe in themselves and build confidence in their instinct and judgment. Healing from this trauma can be very difficult and learning to trust themself and others, and believing in their own thoughts can be a big step. The more they practice, the stronger they will get. People always need to remember their inner voice was never gone, it was just hidden by someone else's opinion and thoughts. After one grows from this, they can forever hear their inner voice once again.
Seven brew review
By Abbi Feagan
Today I had the opportunity to try out a new coffee spot within our area called 7 Brew. 7 Brew is located on the south side of Rangeline near the interstate, and it is a drive-thru coffee shop. The first admirable thing
I noticed when going through the drive-thru is that the
employees are using iPads waiting at the line for you to
come around with your order. This technique made ordering super fast and efficient and made it very easy
to order. Another thing that made 7 Brew stand out, is within the first week of opening they gave out free
sweatshirts and t-shirts when you purchase a large coffee, which was a really cool branding idea. When trying the drinks, they were all delicious in the opinions of the other classmates, keep reading below to see what they rated their drinks!
